Laminated Switchable Privacy Glass in NYC & NJ
Glass that changes from clear to frosted at the touch of a button. Signature Glass Creations designs and installs custom laminated switchable privacy glass for homes and commercial interiors throughout New York City and New Jersey.
You may know this type of glazing as smart glass, switchable glass, or electric privacy glass. Our featured system uses PNLC technology: the glass stays clear when the power is off and turns white and frosted when the power is on. The switchable film is enclosed between two panes of glass.
Our completed projects include custom steel sliding doors, swing doors, and coordinating panels, with welded steel profiles and a black powder-coated finish.
- Power OFF: Clear glass.
- Power ON: White, frosted glass for privacy.
- Laminated construction: The switchable film sits between two glass panes.
What Is Switchable Privacy Glass?
Switchable privacy glass changes its appearance using an electrical control. It lets you create visual separation between rooms without adding curtains or blinds. In its clear state, you can see through the glazing; in its frosted state, it obscures the view.
Smart glass and electric glass are broad descriptions. They do not tell you which switching technology is inside the glass or how it behaves when the power is off. We explain the selected system and demonstrate both states before you finalize your choice.
For our laminated PNLC product, privacy is activated by switching the power on. The glass returns to clear during a power outage. Lighting, viewing angle, and how close someone stands to the glass can affect the appearance and level of privacy, so we review your requirements during planning.
PNLC vs. Conventional PDLC: What Changes for You?
The practical difference to understand first is which state needs power. Our PNLC system operates in the opposite direction to conventional PDLC privacy glass.
| Condition | Our PNLC glass | Conventional PDLC glass |
|---|---|---|
| Power off | Clear | Frosted |
| Power on | White / frosted | Clear |
| Power outage | Returns to clear | Returns to frosted |
Choose around how you use the space. Tell us whether you want the glass clear or frosted when unpowered, how often privacy is needed, and your expectations during an outage. We confirm the selected product’s operating requirements before fabrication.
PNLC and PDLC describe switching technologies. Laminated and surface-applied describe the construction. These are separate choices; conventional PDLC can also be laminated inside glass.
Why We Recommend Laminated Switchable Glass
For the custom PNLC doors and panels we build, we prefer to enclose the switchable film between two panes of glass. This protects the functional layer from direct touching, cleaning, and surface abrasion.
On a frequently used door, people touch the glazing and cleaners wipe it regularly. With laminated construction, that contact takes place against the outer glass instead of the PNLC film.
Laminated Glass vs. Film Applied to Existing Glass
- Laminated switchable glass: The film is enclosed within a new glass assembly.
- Surface-applied smart film: The film is applied to an existing glass surface, leaving its face and edges more accessible to contact.
- Our experience: Exposed film can be vulnerable to scratches, edge lifting, or peeling. We prefer laminated PNLC for our new custom doors and panels.
Laminated construction still requires appropriate cleaning, handling, edge protection, and sealing. Suitability for heat, moisture, or sunlight exposure depends on the selected system and its specified operating conditions.
Consider Replacement Costs Alongside the Initial Price
Switchable glass is a substantial investment. A replacement can involve material, removal, labor, electrical reconnection, and disruption to the finished space. We recommend considering those costs when comparing options.
If the enclosed switchable layer fails, the complete laminated glass panel may need replacement. Protecting the film from direct contact does not eliminate every possible failure. We discuss warranty coverage and replacement considerations before fabrication.
Custom Steel Sliding Doors with Switchable Glass
Combine laminated smart glass with sliding doors designed around your opening and interior. Our completed work includes custom welded steel profiles with a black powder-coated finish.
We coordinate the glass dimensions, frame proportions, tracks, handles, and electrical connections. The power connection must accommodate the door’s movement, so these details are planned before fabrication.
Custom Steel Swing Doors with Smart Privacy Glass
Our swing doors combine custom steel fabrication and laminated PNLC glazing. Keep the glass clear for an open appearance, then switch on its frosted privacy state when needed.
We review door weight, hinges, clearances, latching hardware, and electrical connections together. Frame and glazing details are coordinated with the selected glass assembly.
Door Hardware and Finishing Details
The quality of a custom door extends beyond its appearance. Handles, latching hardware, and seals are selected around the frame and intended use. Depending on the configuration, options may include a ball catch and an automatic drop-down gasket.
These close-ups show hardware on a separate white-framed PNLC door project.

Switchable Glass for Fixed Panels and Partitions
Laminated PNLC glass can also be incorporated into fixed panels and interior partitions to change visual separation between adjoining spaces. Panels can be planned alongside sliding or swing doors for a coordinated installation.
Tell us how the space will be used, when privacy is needed, and how you want to control the glass. We review the layout, framing, and electrical requirements around the project.
Planning Your Switchable Glass Installation
- Share your project: Send approximate dimensions, photos or drawings, the location, and the type of doors or panels needed.
- Review the glass: See the clear and frosted states and discuss privacy requirements and operating conditions.
- Develop the design: Coordinate frame profiles, finishes, hardware, glass construction, and mounting details.
- Plan the electrical work: Review controls, power supplies, wiring routes, service access, and who is responsible for the electrical work.
- Confirm and fabricate: Final measurements and approved details guide fabrication.
- Install and demonstrate: We coordinate installation and demonstrate the completed system.
What Affects the Cost of Laminated Smart Glass?
Each installation is quoted around its design and scope. Glass is only one part of the complete door or partition system.
- Glass dimensions, quantity, and specified construction.
- Sliding doors, swing doors, or fixed panels.
- Custom steel profiles and finishes.
- Tracks, hinges, handles, catches, and seals.
- Controls, power supplies, and wiring requirements.
- Delivery access, site conditions, and installation scope.
For an initial estimate, send the approximate opening size and a photo or drawing. Let us know whether this is new construction or replacement glazing in an existing interior.
Questions About Switchable Privacy Glass
Are smart glass, electric glass, and PNLC the same thing?
Smart glass and electric glass are broad terms used for electrically controlled glazing. PNLC identifies the technology in the laminated privacy glass featured on this page. Always check the actual product’s clear and frosted states and its power requirements.
Does your glass need power to stay clear?
No. Our PNLC glass is clear with the power off. Switching the power on changes it to its white, frosted privacy state.
What happens during a power outage?
Our PNLC glass returns to clear. Discuss this behavior with us if your space needs privacy during an outage.
Is the switchable film exposed?
No. In our laminated PNLC glass, the film is enclosed between two glass panes.
Is frosted privacy glass the same as blackout glass?
No. A frosted appearance does not mean a room becomes dark or that every silhouette disappears. We demonstrate the glazing so you can evaluate it for your lighting and privacy needs.
Can I choose a custom door design?
Yes. We review steel frame profiles, dimensions, finishes, and hardware with you. The design must accommodate the glass assembly, door movement, and electrical connections.
Can laminated PNLC glass be installed anywhere?
Suitability depends on the selected system. Tell us about heat, moisture, sunlight exposure, and the intended location so we can review the application before quoting.
